House To Be Home

These four walls

Built upon this foundation

Keep the roof from caving in

This window

An exit to imagination

Has bolted bars to keep me in

It hasn’t been easy, especially for the boy

He has trouble sleeping

He tosses and shakes, trembles and quakes

While patiently waits

For house to be home

These blankets

Perform intended operations

Though they smell of nicotine

My pillow

Bears the weight of all my contemplations

It’s simply bursting at the seams

It hasn’t been easy, especially for the girl

She has trouble sleeping

She twists and she turns, shudders and churns

While patiently yearns

For house to be home

And the frames on the wall aren’t familiar at all

And the car in the drive ain’t the one that we’d ride in

This backyard is scattered

with stone and plastic flowers

Won’t someone help me find the green

It hasn’t been easy, especially on the kids

They have trouble sleeping

They whimper and weep, cry in their sleep

But quiet they’ll keep

‘Til house can be home

And the books on the shelf

Must be somebody else's

And the man in the door

Was much younger before

And the paint on the wall should be paper

And all of the drapes should be blinds

But the carpets are fine

And the rooms are askew

There were three, now there's two

But I think that in time we might find

This house could be home
